These corresponding online programs are for adults who are using alcohol and would like to moderate or abstain from use.
CheckUp & Choices (formerly Moderatedrinking.com) and Moderation Management™ (MM) are corresponding online programs that are designed to encourage individuals to reduce alcohol use. CheckUp & Choices guides participants in setting and maintaining goals, and MM offers participants opportunities to join an online network of individuals who also have concerns regarding their drinking behaviors.
A study that evaluated the use of CheckUp & Choices plus MM versus MM alone found that both groups experienced significant improvements in alcohol-related problems and consumption variables when baseline values were compared to the average of 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up assessments. The largest improvements occurred between baseline and 3 months; however, concerns exist regarding the analyses employed in this study (i.e., the use of overall average post-test scores across all time points). Therefore, the results of this study should be interpreted cautiously.
CheckUp & Choices presents data to participants about what moderate drinking is and helps to guide participants in their decision about whether or not to change their drinking habits. Program content addresses the following:
MM is a behavioral change program and a national peer support group network that offers face-to-face meetings at various locations in the United States and abroad. In addition, participants can visit online meetings, courses, a listserv, and a forum. Online moderation guidelines, a self-help book, tools, and an online calendar to record daily drinking habits are also available.
MM opened its national office in 2000. CheckUp & Choices became available in December 2009. Exact numbers of individuals who have registered to use the programs were not available.
No training is required, as these programs are delivered online.
Considerations for implementing these programs include acquiring participant buy-in, ensuring participants have access to a computer with internet capabilities, and understanding participants must pay a fee to purchase and complete the programs.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
