This program is for adult males, including men, trans men, and nonbinary people who have a masculine experience of the world, who have substance use disorders.
Helping Men Recover: A Program for Treating Addiction (Helping Men Recover), a community-based, trauma-informed program, is designed to treat addiction and decrease substance use, raise awareness of experienced and perpetuated trauma, decrease post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma symptoms, and increase self-worth.

Helping Men Recover focuses on the unique strengths and challenges that men face while in recovery from addiction. The program addresses the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, the relational needs of men, and experienced and perpetuated abuse and trauma. The program includes four modules that focus on key areas of men's recovery process:
The program is delivered to groups of 6 to 12 men. Participants complete activities during each session and use a workbook and a journal to practice new skills and process their group experiences.

Pilot tests of the program have been conducted at the River Ridge Treatment Center in Burnsville, Minnesota, and at Cooper Street Correctional Facility in Jackson, Michigan. Previous use beyond these pilot tests was not located.
This program is facilitated by drug and alcohol counselors; mental health professionals; or program administrators for outpatient, residential, and community-based treatment centers. On-site, off-site, and online training options are available. There is also a manual that describes how to implement the program. Considerations for implementing this program include recruiting a suitable facilitator and making arrangements for them to receive training, acquiring participant buy-in, locating space to hold sessions, obtaining any materials or supplies needed for sessions and activities completed during sessions, and ensuring the program is delivered with fidelity.
