This program is delivered to child care providers and youth program staff, who are working in organizations that are committed to providing services to youth with and without disabilities, and is intended to impact providers, staff, and youth.
Kids Included Together (KIT), a community-based program, is designed to improve attitudes and competence regarding the inclusion of children with disabilities among providers who offer recreational, child and youth development programs.
The results of a pretest, posttest study indicated significant, positive changes in attitudes and perceived competence regarding inclusion of children with disabilities among child care providers who participated in one or more of KIT's four core training modules. Additionally, although change was significant for providers who participated in any number of modules, change was significantly greater for those who participated in three or more modules compared to those who participated in only one. Please note, this study assessed the results of live training workshops, and these results may not extend to online training.
KIT intends to teach providers how to create inclusive environments for youth. The KIT program is available through live, in-person workshops and through self-paced, online courses. Course topics include the following:
In addition, live, interactive webinars are held on key inclusion topics, and participants have the opportunity to ask personalized questions and receive support. Coaching and consultation sessions are also available.
KIT was developed in 1977 in San Diego, California, and this program instructs more than 20,000 learners each year through trainings at domestic and international sites. KIT partnered with the United States Department of Defense in 2010 and is implemented in all branches of the military.
No training is required as KIT personnel present the live workshops and online courses.
Considerations for implementing this program include obtaining commitment from participants to incorporate inclusion principles and strategies after completion of the workshops or courses, ensuring participants who want to complete the online training have access to a computer and the internet, and understanding online participation will require personal time and commitment to complete the training.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
