This program is for administrators, school staff and faculty, parents, and students in middle schools and high schools.
Hazelden Lifelines®, a school-based program, is designed to prevent suicide among students and give participants the skills and tools they need to intervene and respond to potentially suicidal situations.
One single-group, uncontrolled study that evaluated the Lifelines Prevention program was conducted among a group of adolescents from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Results assessed 1 month after program completion indicated a significant improvement in student perceptions concerning school readiness in response to a suicidal event. There were no effects on other suicide-prevention knowledge or skill outcomes.
Hazelden Lifelines intends to create a school environment that encourages students to ask for help and teaches members of the school community how to identify, respond, and access resources for students at risk for suicidal behavior. The complete program consists of three components:
Early versions of this program have been used since the 1980s. The program has been most frequently implemented in Maine; however, it is also used in other states.
Hazelden provides training to facilitators for each of the three components separately or a more comprehensive training for all components together. Training of trainers is also available. Please use details in the Contact section to learn more.
Considerations for implementation of this program include acquiring buy-in from all members of the school community; securing parental permissions; obtaining training, if desired; and making time for various program activities.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
