This program is for students in elementary and secondary schools.
Alphabetic Phonics, a school-based, English-language curriculum, is designed to teach reading, reading comprehension, handwriting, spelling, and verbal and written language by using participants' visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses. This program relies on the principles of the Orton-Gillingham method and was originally developed for individuals with dyslexia; however, the program has been adapted for use with all students.
Although research studies have been conducted that have used adaptations of the Alphabetic Phonics curriculum, no peer-reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of the original curriculum were located.
Alphabetic Phonics teaches participants through daily sessions based on ten different comprehension activities:
Lessons are supplemented with flashcards, workbooks, activities, and assessments.
This curriculum has been used widely in school districts across the United States.
This program requires no official training. Facilitators will benefit from reviewing the teacher manuals, which can be purchased on the program website. Please use details in the Contact section to gain more information
Considerations for implementing this program include acquiring administrative support and teacher buy-in, ensuring teachers familiarize themselves with the manual, and finding time to implement daily sessions in an existing curriculum.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
