This program is for children in kindergarten through 6th grade.
Know Your Body (KYB), an inclusive, multi-component, school-based health education program, is designed to positively alter participants' understanding of and approach toward their general health and help youth engage in healthy behaviors.
No peer reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of this program were located.
The KYB program includes five components.
The required components include the following:
The optional components include the following:
Spanish curricula and materials are available for purchase.
The KYB program has been available since the 1970s and was originally developed by the American Health Foundation through a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The extent to which the program has been used is unknown.
The American Health Foundation provides on-site training for classroom teachers and a KYB coordinator, who is designated by the schools. Training for teachers and a KYB coordinator lasts 1 to 5 days.
Considerations for implementing this program include acquiring teacher, parent, and student buy-in; understanding there may be potential costs associated with the optional health screening information sessions; and finding time to offer extra education sessions to families of children who are considered at risk for future development of chronic disease.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu

KYB requires about 40 hours of classroom instruction. Time to complete additional activities selected by the school varies.
No information about implementation costs were located.
To move KYB to the Promising category on the Clearinghouse Continuum of Evidence, at least one evaluation should be performed demonstrating positive effects lasting at least one year from the beginning of the program or at least six months from program completion.
The Clearinghouse can help you develop an evaluation plan to ensure the program components are meeting your goals. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
