Topic: Obesity, Nutrition/Diet, Physical Activity
Target Population: Middle Childhood
Sector: School-Based
This program was for elementary school students.
The Commit 2B Fit® School Program, a school-based program, was designed to increase children's physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption.
No peer-reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of this program were located. One descriptive pretest/posttest design study of the Commit 2B Fit School Program found that 70% of students reported that they were more active while participating in the program. Physical activity behavior was measured by questionnaires rather than a direct assessment of exercise time.
The Commit 2BFit programs* included children-focused and family-based approaches to health improvement. The Commit 2B Fit School Program was based on the general Commit 2B Fit model that promoted behavior change by having participants set goals and monitor their progress. The program consisted of small daily lessons that built upon previous lessons about nutrition, physical activity, and goal setting and reinforced those positive health behaviors. The primary component of the program included the use of the Commit 2B Fit Wellness Planner, which was an academic planner that could be used to track school work and healthy lifestyle behaviors, set goals, and monitor progress toward meeting those goals. Children, parents, and teachers communicated via the Wellness Planner, and parents and teachers worked together to help children achieve a healthier lifestyle. The planner specifically encouraged children to set and reach goals related to fruit and vegetable consumption, time spent in physical activity, and tooth-brushing practices and included educational health tips, a chart to record homework assignments, and a place for teachers and parents to write notes to each other.
At the beginning of the program, students took a pledge to Commit 2B Fit and received a charm and necklace to motivate them to engage in healthy behaviors.
The program also included supporting materials, such as a student training manual, student incentives, a recess solutions teaching manual, a website with teacher manuals and suggested family activities, and retail/community promotion materials.
*Separate fact sheets are available for other Commit 2B Fit programs.
Commit 2B Fit programs were developed in 2005. The Commit 2B Fit School program was used extensively across south Florida and was implemented in various schools across the United States.
No information on training was located.
Although this program is no longer available, considerations for implementing a similar program could include acquiring buy-in from the physical education and classroom teachers and students, allowing teachers time to prepare for education activities and include these activities within the school day, and understanding that teachers should evaluate whether the academic planner can replace the currently used planner and determine if the planner meets their students’ academic needs.
