This program was for Active Duty and Reserve personnel in the U.S. Army.
The Army MOVE! program was based on the MOVE!* weight management program developed for Veterans and was designed to help Soldiers meet and maintain their weight goals. This program contained material modifications and delivery method adjustments to accommodate Army personnel, and each Army location could deliver its own on-site program.
*A separate fact sheet is available for this program.
No peer-reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of this program were located. The MOVE! weight management program for Veterans is placed Unclear+ on the Clearinghouse Continuum of Evidence.
Participants enrolled in this program and then completed a 23-item, self-assessment questionnaire, which identified aspects of their lifestyle that could be improved to achieve a healthier routine and general physical well-being. Participants received personalized advice, educational materials, and lifestyle change plans. In addition, they were encouraged to join group wellness classes delivered by health care professionals in a wellness center, available at some locations, or online through Adobe Connect, available at all locations.
Handouts were also available and included information on weight loss goals, healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity, behavior health modification, and nutrition.
Army MOVE! has been available through Army Knowledge Online since 2008. However, the extent to which the program has been used is unknown.
There were no training requirements; all program content was delivered on-site or remotely by health professionals from the MOVE! program office or the site’s wellness department.
Considerations for implementing a similar program might include obtaining buy-in from participants and base command, understanding this program requires a high level of commitment and self-motivation, ensuring participants have access to a computer with internet capabilities, and finding time for participants to attend classes for the face-to-face or in-person delivery formats.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu
