Topic: Obesity, Nutrition/Diet, Physical Activity, Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco, Depression
Target Population: Older Adults
Sector: Community-Based
This program is for adults who are 65 years old and older but can be modified for adults who are 50 years old and older.
The 10 Keys™ to Healthy Aging program is designed to promote good health and positive well-being in older adults.
This program was evaluated in a pre-test/post-test study with follow-ups at 12 and 24 months. Results at 12 months indicated that there were significant improvements in control of systolic blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels and increases in pneumonia vaccinations and bone density screenings. However, there were significant decreases in flu vaccinations and the number of individuals who were able to rise from a chair. At 24 months, there were significant improvements in control of systolic blood pressures and LDL cholesterol and increases in the number of colonoscopy and bone density tests. However, there were significant decreases in the number of flu vaccinations.
This program encourages older adults to work with their doctors and play an active role in their health. The main elements in the 10 Keys to Healthy Aging program include discussions lead by Certified Health Ambassadors on the following topics:
A Resource Guide, given to participants, contains information for key topics, space to record personal goals and action steps, take-home assignments, and a list of answers to frequently asked questions.
The 10 Keys to Healthy Aging program was developed in 2001 by the Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. The program is implemented in various sites in and around Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; however, further previous use information was unavailable.
Information on training was not located. Please use details in the Contact section to learn more.
Considerations for implementing this program include recruiting facilitators and ensuring they complete training, acquiring participant buy-in, and finding space to hold classes.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu

To move 10 Keys to Healthy Aging to the Promising category on the Clearinghouse Continuum of Evidence, at least one evaluation with a control group should be performed demonstrating consistent, positive effects lasting at least one year from the beginning of the program or at least six months from program completion.
